Quality Control in DMSO Production

By Quality Assurance Team

Quality control is paramount in DMSO manufacturing, ensuring each batch meets stringent specifications for its intended grade and application.

COA Specifications

A typical Certificate of Analysis for electronic grade DMSO includes assay (GC), water content (Karl Fischer), color (APHA/Pt-Co), acidity, and comprehensive metal analysis by ICP-MS.

Each parameter has defined acceptance criteria based on grade requirements. Electronic grade demands the tightest tolerances across all specifications.

Testing Methods

Gas chromatography determines assay percentage using calibrated reference standards. Water content measurement via coulometric Karl Fischer titration achieves ppm-level accuracy.

UV-Vis spectrophotometry evaluates optical properties critical for semiconductor applications. Transmittance at 400nm must exceed 99% for electronic grade.

Metal Analysis

ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) detects trace metals at parts-per-billion levels. Standard panels include Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb.

Clean sampling techniques and pre-cleaned containers prevent contamination during analysis. Dedicated clean room laboratories minimize background interference.

Batch Traceability

Complete batch records track raw materials, process parameters, and test results from production through packaging. This enables rapid investigation and recall if quality issues arise post-shipment.

Retention samples from each batch support future reference testing and customer investigations.

Continuous Improvement

Statistical process control monitors key parameters over time, identifying trends before they approach specification limits. Six Sigma methodologies drive ongoing reduction in variability.

Regular method validation ensures analytical procedures remain accurate and precise as equipment ages or reagents change.
